Settlements along the Adirondack Trail evolved from the original scattered log cabins to well-built cottages and homes. Many provided a good view of the lake or were on lakefront property. In the early years, the valuable land was across the road from the river or lake, away from the cold winds of winter. Lakefront houses were hard to heat. Note the road sign in the front of this Wells cottage, with mileages north to Utica, Piseco, Lake Pleasant, Speculator, Weavertown, and North Creek and south to Gloversville and Northville.
